Not really into Pop music - at least, not since LMFAO seems to fit in that iTunes category - but this is actually pretty good. It kind of reminds me of those days were Justin Timberlake was producing stuff worth of a “Greatest Hits” album.
The Civil Wars’ debut album that sold 25,000 copies in its first week has just been released on iTunes in The Netherlands.
Two Grammy awards, top of the charts in iTunes and a promising future; these are some of the characteristics that describe the alternative country band from Tennessee, The Civil Wars. This duo is comparable to bands like Lady Antebellum and Sugarland. However, the last two do not have that indie sound that make The Civil Wars songs so melancholic and enjoyable at the same time.
John Paul White met Joy William four years ago at a Writing Camp session. After doing some covers, they realized how perfectly their voices matched together and decided to form a group, which turned out to be the best decision of their career as musicians. The Civil Wars’ debut studio album was released on November 25, 2011. That same year, they were nominated for several awards organized by recognized events within the country music industry, such as the Americana Music Association Awards where they were nominated as duo/group of the year.
The whole album can be classified as a deep and romantic piece of art, which songs basically describe the balance between love and disappointment and the consequences that this might have in a relationship between two lovers.
“Barton Hollow” made its breakout, when the song “Poising & Wine” was used in an episode of the well-know TV drama series Grey’s Anatomy and since then they have appeared in many Television shows, such as “The Late Show with David Letterman” and have reached the No. 1 on the ITunes chart for 9 days. The lyrical style of most the songs included in this album, such as “The Violet Hour” and “Falling”, is based on exploring the conflicts that arise as part of a relationship.
Thus, if you are one of those people that can associate love with masochism and find the romance in that, you might want to give this album a shot. After all, you know the guys from The Civil Wars have done their job when their music makes you want to be in a relationship even if they are singing about how unhealthy and complicated it can get.
Probably my favorite Nirvana song. It still surprises me how this version did not become as popular as the original one. Nirvana’s sound is basically summed up in just a single track.
The 21-years old acoustic songwriter Ed Sheeran ends his European tour with a crowed final concert in Amsterdam.
Monday March 12th, a night that many ‘Amsterdammers’ may not forget, or at least not those who were able to attend Ed Sheeran’s concert last night. The British pop/folk musician not only played his biggest hits, such as The A team or Lego House, but he also managed to entertain more than 1200 people for around three consecutive hours during his first gig in Amsterdam.
The night started with two opening shows from, the YouTube sensation, Nina Nesbitt and, the experienced but not-so-popular folk artist, Passenger. Both of them got a quite warm reception from the audience, which was described as polite and welcoming by these two charismatic British artists.
Around 9 o’clock, the lack of tolerance and the increasing impatience started to show up in some of the people from the audience who kept shouting Sheeran’s first name, in hope for a quick response from their idol, who came on stage thirty minutes after the official time, a lateness that he blamed on his obsession for the popular smartphone application “Temple Run”, which apparently kept him entertained longer than he had planned.
After telling some more jokes and interacting with his public, The British songwriter started his big last European show with some romantic ballads such as “Give Me Love” and “Small Bump”, songs that were played while the audience was in complete silence, as Sheeran requested. According to him, he wants his audiences to enjoy his songs in a quiet atmosphere. Sheeran’s ballads were then followed by other original songs like the funky “You Need me, I Don’t Need You” and “The City”.
One particular thing that caught my attention was Ed’s ability of using the loop station effect in many of the songs he performed that night. There is no doubt that this talented young artist was born to perform on stage and has definitely much more to give. Thus, for the next date: Be sure you get your tickets on time before they are sold out!
To be completely honest, if it wasn’t for Ryan Adams’ lyrical style and that raspy voice smartly used and adapted in all his new songs, Ashes & Fires probably would not have been on my top list.
Despite from the fact that this album cannot be compared to his old stuff such as “Easy Tiger” or “Heartbreaker” (which according to me is one of the best albums of the last decade), Ashes & Fires does not disappoint. Ryan Adams’ alternative country songs and rock ballads are the best option to lead a “Sunday’s afternoon songs” list.
I would have liked to hear more of that harmonica, however the violin in songs like “Rocks” or “Save Me” reward the lack use of wind instruments.
Ed is a British singer-songwriter who became popular thanks to… no, not youtube, no, not because he had good contacts in the music industry. It was thanks to his own determination, hard work and obviously innate talent that his debut album “+” sold more than 102,000 copies during the first week of its release.
In + Sheeran combines Hip Hop, Indie Folk and Acoustic alternative songs and turn them into sweet ballads, that somehow turn out to be romantic, yet not cheesy.
What I like the most about this guy, is his ability to make you fall in love instantly with his voice and his lyrical style. Most ballads are full of cliches and corny expressions that somehow make you want to vomit (Maybe it is just me). Most of them make love sound ridiculous and overrated. However, Ed touches that soft place we all have, whether his songs make you want to serenade your lover or destroy that asshole’s face, you can say they actually make you feel something unlike other “romantic” songs.
This guy has made such a great breakthrough, worthy of recognition and hope for newcomers. I can only congratulate the UK, now they can add one more name to its “great British artists” list.
Merry Christmas! , Here my favorite classic Christmas song. Soft, warm and relevant during these holidays. All Elvis’ christmas songs are denied classics. Enjoy that beautiful voice.
“Don’t you see? The people in the video are a representation of us. We are wondering what happened in the video just like those people in the video were wondering what happened to the man. We must stop being so critical. It will be the end of us”
Best video ever made. Be prepared to get mind-fucked.
